Do You Ever Have Trouble Turning Around Your Want Statements?

When you want something, you want it. Wouldn’t it be going into denial to turn that around?

Want Statements Are Hard to Argue With

And yet every time you work a Judge-Your-Neighbor Worksheet, you’re faced with this sometimes daunting task.

Line 2 of any Judge-Your-Neighbor Worksheet is a place where you get to write down what you want. And when you do The Work on these want statements, you’re faced with turning around those dear wants.

Some of which you may be very attached to.

So How Can You Turn Them Around?

The Work is not about going into denial.

There must be some way to find genuine examples for why you don’t actually want something that you want! It sounds impossible.

But if you’ve done The Work a bit you’ve probably experienced that it’s not actually too hard. The key is just asking yourself how it could be true and waiting for your mind to find something. But sometimes you still come up with nothing. What do you do then?

Here’s Are Some Questions I Often Ask Myself

I ask myself, “What are the advantages of not getting what I want? How does it serve me? Or how is it better for me or others?” These questions often open up my mind so I can find an example or two, or more.

And when I see that there are real advantages for not getting what I want in a particular situation, then the turnaround, “I don’t want it” becomes much more palatable.

I Invite You to Try it Out

Next time you get stuck finding examples for your turnarounds try asking yourself, “What are the advantages of not getting what I want in this situation?” And let me know how it works for you.

Have a great week,
Todd
