A Simple Way to Work with Fear

Apricots Hanging Ready for the Harvest
Fear comes from the possibility of not getting, or losing, the fruit of my desire.

How to Do The Work With Fear?

There are many ways to do The Work with fear.

1. You can make a list of your fears and question them.

2. You can write a worksheet on a future situation that you fear and work it.

3. You can write a worksheet on a past situation that you fear will happen again and work it.

4. You can ask yourself, “Why am I afraid of that?” And make a list of your answers. And then question each item on your list.

5. You can make a list of the worst that could happen if your fears came true. Then question each “worst that could happen” statement.

But Here’s A Simple Way

I notice that I can’t be afraid without wanting something.

Either I want to get something, and I’m afraid that I won’t be able to get it. Or I have what I want, and I’m afraid that I will lose it. In both cases, it is my want that is at the root of my fear.

So next time you’re feeling fear, try this experiment. Ask yourself, “What do I want?” And then question your want using the four questions and turnarounds of The Work.

When I do this I often find that I’m equally okay with not getting what I want as I am with getting what I want.

When this is the case, what is there to be afraid of?

Have a great weekend,
Todd
