When I want to forgive someone in general, I sometimes write a general worksheet. I’m not writing about one particular instance, but about general personality traits.
The addictive mind doesn’t care that the substance brings pain along with the pleasure. It doesn’t care that there is poison mixed with sweetness. The mind just grabs it, focusing first on the sweetness, and then later on the regret of having eaten poison.
Once I forgot to check the oil in my car and destroyed the engine driving across the desert. Boy was that stupid! I immediately went into anger and self-blame. But what happened to the trial? Don’t I get a fair trial like anyone else?
The word “story” has a connotation. It has the connotation that you’re making something up, telling a lie. And telling a lie also has a connotation of being bad. So there can be a little bit of judgment floating around the word story.
If mourning truly feels like love, then there is no problem with it lasting forever. But if mourning feels like pain, then I want to check it out.
